International Nuclear Energy Results for 1998

Bonn, 24.02.1999

Vollständiger Mitteilungstext."German nuclear power plants still lead the world," says Dr Wilfried Steuer, President of the German Atomic Forum, commenting on an international comparison of operating figures. The world champion in 1998 was the Grohnde nuclear plant, with an output of 11.76 billion kilowatt hours, and second place was taken by the American Palo Verde 2 nuclear power plant. Third to sixth places were taken by Isar 2, Emsland, Neckar 2, and Philippsburg 2.

A total of six German nuclear power plants figured amongst the international Top Ten, and each delivered more than 11 billion kilowatt hours (kWh). By way of comparison: 10 billion kWh would be enough to provide a gigantic city like Hamburg with all the electricity it needs for a whole year. In addition to the German power plants in the Top Ten there were also two American ones and a British and a Japanese one.

This shows that in 1998, once again, German nuclear power plants show up well in any international comparison. Since the early 1980s they have taken between 3 and 7 of the leading positions every year. These figures are only possible because the individual nuclear power plants achieve not only the relevant output levels but also an outstandingly good level of availability. In Dr Steuer`s opinion, these figures testify impressively to the high degree of technical maturity of German nuclear power plants, and the very good level of qualification of their operating staff.

At the end of last year there were 430 nuclear power plants in operation all over the world, and they produced 2.4 trillion kWh of electricity. Nuclear power thus supplied 17 percent of world electricity production.

Since the beginning of the peaceful use of nuclear energy, a total of 34.7 trillion kilowatt hours of electricity have been produced from uranium and plutonium, that means: 34,700,000,000,000 kWh! - or nearly 70 times as much electricity as is generated (from all sources) every year in Germany.
