First Analysis Indicates that Incident at Swedish Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant is not Applicable to German Plants

Berlin, 04.08.2006

The Swedish regulatory authority SKI, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) are currently investigating in detail the causes of the process disturbance at the Swedish Forsmark nuclear power plant. SKI has classified this process disturbance as a Level-2 event on the seven-grade International Nuclear Event Scale, i. e. as a so-called "Incident".

According to what is known so far about the event sequences at Forsmark it can be excluded that if such an event were to occur in one of the German nuclear power plants, I would have the same consequences. There are no indications whatsoever that the event could be applied to German plants. Nevertheless, the high level of safety culture of the German nuclear power plant operators commands that the causes of the process disturbance at Forsmark be analysed in depth together with the German regulatory authorities.

The concept of uninterrupted power supply established at the German nuclear power plants differs significantly from the concept established at the Forsmark plant. Differences exist in the dimensioning and the equipment technology used, like e.g. the DC/AC inverters installed.
