Today sees the start of the European Nuclear Conference (ENC 2002) in Lille (northern France). The German Atomic Forum (DAtF) supports this event which with its workshops and specialist lectures always provides ample opportunity for a lively exchange of experiences, serving the maintenance of competence and the transfer of know-how in the field of peaceful nuclear energy utilisation. Every four years, this conference - which is the biggest of the industry - unites nuclear experts, industry executives and politicians from more than 20 countries. For Germany, this is an extremely important event as nuclear power will continue to remain a fixed part of the country`s energy mix for a long time to come.
The German power utilities are sticking to the compromise on nuclear power negotiated with the Federal Government. Irrespective of this agreement, they consider it wrong to leave out nuclear power from the start in decisions on investments concerning the far distant future. Dr. Gert Maichel, President of the DAtF, calls upon those responsible to keep the nuclear power option in Germany open, especially against the background of growing energy imports.
