Federal Minister for the Environment Sigmar Gabriel is suffering from memory loss during the hot phase of the election campaign. In the last few days he has been campaigning vigorously using arguments against final repository exploration in the Gorleben salt dome. However, given the unchanged evidence there is presently nothing which speaks against using this salt dome as a final repository for high active waste. The Federal Ministry for the Environment has known this for many years. The only way to combat Gabriel?s attempts to unsettle the voters is to continue the exploration of the Gorleben salt dome. Only when unprejudiced exploration is complete will it be clear whether or not Gorleben is suitable. If Gabriel really wants to spring a surprise in the election, then he should lift the moratorium on exploration without delay.
